Vegan Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Recipe

As promised, I’m sharing my vegan buttercream frosting recipe with you!

Keep in mind that everyone’s tastes are different – it might be too sweet for some or not sweet enough for others. In any case, the taste can easily be adjusted to your preferences by increasing or decreasing the amount of sugar and using more or less vanilla extract.

I always loved chocolate frosting on my cake as a child, so below I included a variation of the vegan buttercream frosting recipe to make it chocolatey!

It’s something about chocolate that just makes everything better, in my opinion. The smell of chocolate reminds me of my childhood and playing with my sisters. I can never pass up a good piece of chocolate cake or cupcake!

Chocolate frosting if done right is absolutely decadent.

The texture of it might be slightly more firm than the original dairy buttercream frosting, thanks to the coconut milk or soy milk.

This makes it ideal for piping and decorating, allowing you to create beautiful cakes! This dairy-free buttercream recipe tastes just like regular dairy chocolate buttercream. You won’t be able to tell the difference!

Buttercream is quite simply a confection made from sugar, water, and shortening. This particular vegan chocolate buttercream recipe uses dairy-free ingredients that can be purchased at any major supermarket.

While some traditional recipes for this decadent topping have almost 30 ingredients, the fact is that all you really need are margarine or vegan butter, powdered sugar, non-dairy milk of your choice, vanilla extract, and cocoa powder.

You can use any brand of non-dairy milk you’d like, but I only recommend unsweetened varieties because they have less of a distinct aftertaste.

When making your decision on which variety to buy, just remember that the type you choose will affect both the flavor and consistency of this delightful frosting – so keep that in mind before heading out to shop!

This Vegan Chocolate Buttercream tastes amazing and is the best frosting to pair with chocolate. You can also use this frosting as a filler for your cake or cupcake.

Vegan Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Recipe

This recipe is for a delicious buttercream that is so silky smooth, dairy-free and vegan. Delicious enough to top any chocolate cupcake or cake!

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Amount: 3 Cups

Ingredients:

1 cup vegan butter, room temperature (it should be soft but not melted). I like Earth Balance.

1/2 cup of cocoa powder (unsweetened)

1/3 cup of non-dairy milk (unsweetened)

3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted (make sure it doesn’t have any clumps or your buttercream won’t turn out right)

1 tsp vanilla extract ( you can add one more tsp for additional flavor and sweetness)

Instructions:

In a large bowl cream together the butter and cocoa powder. Whisk in 3 1/2 cup of powdered sugar at a time until completely incorporated. Add vanilla extract and non-dairy milk. You can use a hand mixer and mix everything for two minutes on low speed until the mixture is silky smooth.

Note: This can be kept in a container for two weeks. Remove from the fridge and let it return to room temperature before re-whipping with an electric mixer until smooth buttercream consistency is achieved again.

Milk to Use: My favorite dairy-free milk to use in this recipe is unsweetened coconut or soy milk. Any other option would work as well, but be aware that it may alter the taste of your buttercream!
